Tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET, the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings skate against each other for Game 6 of their best-of-seven series as part of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. San Jose looks to put the series to bed after their 3-0 series lead has shrunk to a 3-2 edge while Los Angeles looks to even things up on home ice for a chance to do what only three teams in history of the NHL have done and force and win a Game 7 in San Jose after being down 3-0.
The Sharks dominated Games 1 and 2 on home ice by scoring a combined 13 goals before notching an overtime win in Game 3 by a 4-3 final. The Kings then roared back with a 6-3 win in Game 4 in their first elimination game and followed it up with a gritty 3-0 win in Game 5 on the road.
The Sharks were unhappy with the way they played on home ice in Game 5.
"We didn't have the puck as much, we weren't in their end as much," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said per NHL.com. "It's a lot to do with coming out of our zone and creating speed into their zone. When we're playing well, we've all seen it in the series, we're effective. When we're not, it slows us down and we don't get to the net as much."
Kings coach Darryl Sutter doesn't believe that his team winning Games 4 and 5 means that they are carrying momentum into tonight's contest.
"I think it's an old, old story that you should just throw in the fire and burn it. There's momentum only during games. There's no momentum during series because the games are too close," Sutter told NHL.com. "There's not momentum from game to game."
Jeff Carter (two goals, three assists) and Anze Kopitar (one tally, four helpers) are tied for the team lead with five points each in the series while Marian Gaborik (three goals, one assist), Tyler Toffoli (two markers, two helpers) and Drew Doughty (four assists) each have four points.
Patrick Marleau has paced the Sharks in the series with seven points off of three goals and four assists while Joe Pavelski has found the twine twice and added four helpers for six points and Matthew Nieto has lit the lamp twice and added three assists for five points.
Amidst murmurs of a goaltending change, Antti Niemi will likely man the crease for San Jose again tonight after allowing 16 goals on 136 shots while Jonathan Quick will suit up between the pipes for Los Angeles after yielding 19 goals on 177 shots.
The Sharks look to end the series while the Kings hope to force a Game 7 when these teams hit the ice tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for Game 6 of their series as part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
