New England Patriots Rumors: Tom Brady's Age, Ryan Mallett Uncertainty Causes Quarterback Controversy for Pats? [VIDEO]

The New England Patriots made one of the more interesting moves of the draft when they spent a second round pick on Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and made him the fifth quarterback off the board. With Tom Brady getting up there in age, but still playing great football and the heir apparent, Ryan Mallett, still in town, was this the right time to draft a possible Brady apprentice?

Best and Worst Picks of Day Two

Don’t get me wrong, Garoppolo is a solid quarterback prospect and the position in which he was drafted is right about where I would have slotted him, but the Patriots now have a logjam at the position. Brady is the starting quarterback, that we know. But after that what is Bill Belichick thinking? Mallett hasn't seen much action due to Brady's incredible success and with a career stat line of 1-for-4, 17 yards, zero touchdowns and one pick with a career QB rating of 5.2, you can see why the Patriots are worried.

2015 NFL Draft Top Prospects

Spending a second round pick on Garoppolo could pay dividends when Brady hangs up the cleats, but to draft a quarterback with Mallett on the roster has to crush not only his confidence, but his trade value. The Patriots can’t think much of Mallett thus sparking soem competition with the addition of Garoppolo. Had the Patriots traded Mallett to the Texans, per the rumors, and then drafted Garoppolo this would had been a home run situation for New England.

Bill Belichick hasn’t had an issue at quarterback since Brady went down with a torn ACL in 2008, but it looks like he is looking to the future and is starting the competition for Brady’s heir incredibly early.
