As if one morbid World Cup song wasn't enough, footballing icon Pele has decided to join the fray. The three-time World Cup champion didn't feel his country nor the players' struggles were truly captured in the official tournament song from Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull.
Fortunately for your ears, Pele came to the rescue (h/t to NDTV). "It's given me so much happiness. It's made me cry. Football is in our nation's veins," goes the opening verse, which he sang to journalists from Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.
With the 73-year-old waxing poetic like that, Ricky Martin's 1998 "Cup of Life" has officially been rendered obsolete—much to the appeasement of Pele.
"I heard the one by Ricky Martin, but I didn't like it," he added.
"The other songs don't recall the difficulties that teams go through. My song is to tell people not to boo the team."
Someone needs to start booing the artists.
Contrary to popular belief, not every sporting event, sporting television broadcast nor team desperately needs to be soundtracked by a pop singer. To NBC Sports' credit, their coverage of the Barclay's Premier League set a new standard in covering football. The pre-match ceremonies involve no theme song nor commentary. The sounds of the beautiful game are enough to capture the moment.
Look no further than the 45,000-plus singing in unison at Anfield.
That's one stadium serving as a cohesive voice for the 121 years of club history Liverpool boast. You didn't need Carrie Underwood nor Faith Haill to energize the viewership on that day. The Liverpool faithful were enough to prepare them for an all-important showdown between two of England's top clubs.
Unfortunately, the mighty dollar shrieks louder than an out-of-tune pop star. Expect to be subjected to more and more World Cup "anthems" in the years to come.
Fingers crossed no more involve Pele.
