With £50 million to spend and the priority of replacing a center-back, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has set his sights on Real Madrid's Raphael Varane (per the Daily Mail). The 21-year-old defender played all 120 minutes in the club's 4-1 Champions League victory on Saturday and would serve as an immediate upgrade for a club looking to replace the services of David Luiz (the Brazilian international signed with Paris Saint-Germain on Friday).

Unfortunately for Chelsea, the transfer would only be a downgrade for Varane's career.
Injuries and the stellar form of Pepe and Sergio Ramos kept the French international out of Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI for a majority of the 2013-14 season. If playing time is a priority, Varane would easily be able to find more at Stamford Bridge. What he won't find, however, is the one thing every player values: Championships.

Despite Chelsea's Cinderella run to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, the club is no closer to winning the tournament than Varane's current home. An ambitious Madrid are rumored to be chasing the talents of Luis Suarez, which would only bolster a quality side that already boasts the most comprehensive collection of players on the planet.

Varane has already reached the summit of club football. The opportunity to repeat that success will be there at the Santiago Bernabeu. Trading that in for the ceiling of Premier League and FA Cup titles would not serve his best interests.
