Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell believed the team could bench wide receiver Calvin Johnson in an attempt to let him heal his ailing right ankle.
Caldwell spoke to the media concerning the teams best player and said it would be in his best interest to take a backseat this weekend and let his ankle heal up.

"Just being straightforward, I'm going to think about it again this week," Caldwell said. "Strongly. So we'll see.”
This isn't the first time Caldwell hinted at resting Johnson as he said the possibility has always existed and that if Johnson regressed they would have to explore that option. Caldwell spoke last Friday about the possibility of sitting Johnson.
"Just kind of depends on how one progresses during the course of the week," Caldwell said Friday. "There are some times that they move forward enough that they won't have any significant setbacks and other times you don't feel that way. You have to wait until the end of the week and react accordingly.”
Johnson was held to one catch for seven yards in the Lions 17-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Johnson was used mostly as a decoy and later said that if he is going to play he would like to be used in an active role. Johnson is currently the No. 38 ranked wide receiver in fantasy for Week 6 according to Fantasy Pros consensus rankings.

The Lions play their NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and will look to get back to the top of the division.
