Liverpool Transfer News: Iker Casillas Offer Being Made After Victor Valdes Negotiations Stall

Still in search of competition for goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Liverpool have set their sights on the Spanish capital. According to Metro (via Goal Transfer Talk), the club is set to make an offer for Real Madrid's Iker Casillas after seeing a move to sign former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes stall.

No timeline has been given for a potential bid.

Casillas has been subject to increased scrutiny since Spain's failed World Cup campaign. Unsurprisingly, the 33-year-old was unseated by David De Gea in the national team's 4-0 victory over Luxembourg in a 2016 European Cup qualifier. Even his club form has suffered, forcing jeers to rain down from the rafters of the Santiago Bernabeu.

Now in his 15th professional season, Casillas' form and reflexes have deteriorated beyond repair, something even he is well aware of. "I'm not immortal," he said after being benched in favor of De Gea (via AS). "I will not last forever. Everybody has to make their own decision about when to leave the national team, but I feel good, strong and with the desire to help my country do the best we can to be in France and to win the tournament, which isn't going to be easy."

"I wasn't taken aback by what Del Bosque said [about his decision to bench me] because I have a fantastic relationship with him," Casillas added. "He said the same thing to me and I didn't take it personally. I'm not going to be able to play forever. There are players coming through, and I don't view it badly at all."

With Keylor Navas waiting in the wings at Real Madrid, Casillas won't be able to play for Los Blancos for much longer, either. Liverpool will be as tempting a destination as any.
