Both teams are in a bit of a rebuilding mode for the time being, and they allegedly discussed a Rondo trade during the offseason, although it is not known which teams initiated the discussions. The Celtics seem to discuss moving Rondo on an annual basis, and the Lakers have reportedly had some interest in the point guard for several years now.

A Rondo-to-L.A. move could be part of a big free agent splurge for the Lakers, who also will pursue Kevin Love aggressively if he decides to opt out of his current contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Those big free agent signings, combined with the return of a healthy Julius Randle and the probable lottery pick the Lakers will have in next year's draft could return the Lakers to relevance in a hurry.
