Jon "Bones" Jones is fighting Anthony "Rumble" Johnson in May, but he still found time to take a dig at departing light heavyweight Phil Davis, who has left UFC for Bellator. Last year Davis made waves by calling Jones "soft," and saying he'd "crumble like a shortbread cookie" if they fought. Davis went on to lose his bout Johnson on the UFC 172 undercard.
Now that Davis is gone, Jones commented on Davis and insinuated he was fleeing to face lesser competition.
Phil Davis says Jon Jones would "crumble" against him
"I do believe the competition is not as stiff at Bellator as the UFC so I think he'll definitely be a top three guy in the world now. Good for him," Jones said. " Maybe he'll even win it. To be a world champion and to make a little more money, that's a win-win. But good luck 'crumbling me like a cookie' from all the way over there."
Davis lost two of his last three fights in UFC, dropping a unanimous decision to Ryan Bader at UFC on Fox 14. Toward the end of his tenure, Davis had become much more vocal in an effort to raise his profile and speed his ascent into the title picture. Unfortunately for him, his results weren't backing up his talk. He toed the line between contentiousness and taking the high road in his response to Jones' barbs.
"You know what, here is what I have for Jon, because I think this is long overdue," Davis said. "I need to apologize to poor Jonny, because I said those words about crumbling him like a cookie and he has hung onto those words for all of about a year now," Davis said.
"And apparently he hung onto those words because I hurt his feelings. So, let me apologize to him by saying sorry I said I was going to crumble you like a cookie, because he has still not let that go. I get it. I feel bad the poor guy has been worried about that comment ever since I said it. He is very sensitive you know?"
