Goals: Germany—Gotze 11’; Diskerud 41’ - Wood 87’

Recap: Ninety minutes of international football saw the United States defeat Germany 2-1 on Wednesday.

It took all of 11 minutes for the defending champions to take the lead. A composed Mario Gotze duplicated his World Cup success, slotting home a tempered pass from Patrick Herrmann. The Yanks, however, would respond before the half, with Mix Diskerud providing the equalizer in the 41st minute.

A confident United States emerged after the break, culminating in Bobby Wood’s match-winner in the 87th minute.

Key Moment: Germany had one final opportunity to equalize in the denying seconds of the half. Unfortunately for the world champions, Sami Khedira's header was denied by the post.

Man of the Match: Michael Bradley failed to bury his opportunity in the 83rd minute—even his audacious Olimpico was denied in the second half—but the ever-confident 27-year-old proved to be effective on Wednesday.

Lesson Learned: How is Timothy Chandler still a thing? Outside of being German-American—which clearly means something to Jurgen Klinsmann—the 25-year-old has shown nothing to warrant playing time for the national team. Admittedly, Ventura Alvarado’s marking on Gotze’s opener was poor, but Chandler did little to keep the defensive shape, anticipate and close his German counterpart. No World Cup winner should ever be that open inside the box. There are plenty of options Klinsmann can turn to to feature at right-back for the Gold Cup. Chandler should no longer be one of them.

Up Next: With the 2016 European Cup on the horizon, Germany play an actual match of significance against Gibraltar on June 13. The United States turn their attention to the 2015 Gold Cup, opening the tournament in Nashville against Guatemala on July 3.
