The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback battle is heating up, and star wide receiver Justin Jefferson is making one thing clear: he wants a true leader under center. As training camp approaches, Jefferson is calling for a "dawg" quarterback to take control of the offense and guide the team forward.
Jefferson, one of the NFL's top receivers since being drafted in 2020, posted strong numbers in 2024 with 1,533 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, Newsweek reported.
However, his touchdown total dropped to just two last season, his lowest since entering the league. That dip came during a year of unstable quarterback play for Minnesota.
In 2024, Sam Darnold was the team's starter, and Jefferson built solid chemistry with him. But Darnold later left for the Seattle Seahawks and, as reported, went on to win a Super Bowl in February. After his departure, the Vikings struggled to find consistency, cycling through Carson Wentz and second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Justin Jefferson Calls for Tough Leader in Minnesota
Now, Minnesota has brought in veteran Kyler Murray to compete with McCarthy for the starting job. The move has turned training camp into one of the most watched storylines in the league.
According to SportingNews, speaking on NFL Media's "Good Morning Football," Jefferson did not hide what he expects from the competition. He wants more than just talent—he wants toughness and leadership.
"Just competition, for real," Jefferson said. "Just to see, who's gonna be that last man standing? Who's gonna be that dawg? Who's gonna be that leader to carry us throughout the season? Because that is definitely a missing piece that we're looking for and something that is very important to our team, which is the quarterback spot."
Jefferson added that he is ready to work with whoever earns the job. "Just going out there and connecting with any quarterback that's throwing the ball, that's the main important thing this training camp," he said.
When he first entered the NFL, Jefferson had strong chemistry with Kirk Cousins. Since Cousins left for the Atlanta Falcons, the Vikings have searched for a long-term answer at quarterback.
Now, with Murray and McCarthy both in the mix, many believe Murray has the early edge. Still, McCarthy is expected to push hard for the role, making the battle far from settled.
