Patriots Make Cuts, Tim Tebow Still On New England Roster: Bill Belichick Stays Quiet On Quarterback's Status

The New England Patriots announced their first cuts on Monday and Tim Tebow survived to talk about it.

The Patriots trimmed their roster to 77, but still must cut two more players before Tuesday’s league deadline to get to 75. Final cuts down to 53 players come after the team’s fourth exhibition game on Aug. 29 against the New York Giants.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick fueled speculation about Tebow’s status with the team when he decided not to play the third-string quarterback during the team’s 40-9 preseason loss to Detroit last Thursday. According to ESPN, even Lions fans chanted “Tebow, Tebow,” and lustily booed when Belichick elected to keep Tom Brady’s backup, Ryan Mallett, in the game.

"You prepare yourself and be ready for whenever your number is called,” Tebow told ESPN after the game. “There's nothing else to it."

But with Tebow, it seems there always is. According to ESPN, Belichick didn’t provide many answers about his decision to play just two quarterbacks, nor did he take questions about if the benching spoke to Tebow’s perceived value to the team.

"You just prepare, and whatever you're asked to do, you do at 100 percent, with everything you have," Tebow also told ESPN. "You want everything to go well, but it's not. There are going to be ups and downs. That's what life is, and you just have to handle them as best as you possibly can."
