Anthony Bennett has officially cleared waivers and can now negotiate with other teams for the coming NBA season.
Bennett and his camp previously agreed to a contract buyout worth about $3.65 million with the Timberwolves. With the coming of Karl-Anthony Towns, the top pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, Bennett became the odd man out considering the T-Wolves were pretty much filled in the forward-line.
Prior to the buyout, Minnesota tried to shop the 2013 top pick back in June ahead of the scheduled 2015 NBA Draft. Unfortunately there were no takers for the 6-foot-8 power forward which led to the eventual contract buyout.
There were four teams initially interested in picking up Bennett. That included his former team, the Cavaliers, the 76ers, the Trailblazers and the Jazz.
Surprisingly, the frontrunner for Bennett's services is not among the teams mentioned prior. Rather, it is the Raptors who are now in the lead of possibly signing the Canadian basketball player who has yet to show his true potential since his entry back in 2013.
Bennett was the surprise top pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Cavaliers. The 22-year-old native of Toronto, Canada was never able to hit his mark owing to injuries and weight problems.
Bennett spent most of his rookie season on the bench though he did try to work on his game in 2014. He was never able to show his wares for the Cavaliers as a sophomore after he and 2014 top pick Andrew Wiggins were sent packing to the Timberwolves in a deal that involved Kevin Love.
If Bennett and the Raptors come to terms, he will likely sign a new salary worth $947,276 according to ESPN.
