Anaheim enters tonight's game riding a seven-game winning streak as it sits in second place in the Pacific Division behind a red-hot San Jose Sharks team while Toronto comes in on a two-game losing streak after winning six of its first seven games, and head coach Randy Carlyle faces a Ducks team he led to the Stanley Cup in 2007 for the first time as head coach of the Leafs.
The Ducks are kicking off an eight-game road trip after defeating the Dallas Stars 6-3 to close out a five-game homestand in which the team won every single game. Anaheim hasn't lost since Opening Night, but this road trip will test the team's ability to keep it together.
"Everybody took more responsibilities, and we started doing the things we need to do to get better," said Teemu Selanne, who had Anaheim's first goal in its win over Dallas and has tallies in three straight games, according to NHL.com. "It was a good character win, coming back from two goals. This team never stopped believing we could come back, even last year. That's the one strength we have right now."
Despite their recent struggles, Toronto enters the game just one point behind the Detroit Red Wings for first place in the Atlantic Division. Toronto averaged four goals per game in its first seven games while coming away with six wins, but it has just three goals over its last two games--both losses.
"We'll try to review and reset, revisit," Carlyle told The Toronto Star. "We believe we can go in and outwork hockey clubs. I don't believe we outworked the Chicago Blackhawks (on Saturday)."
In order to reset, Toronto will have to stop a streaking Ducks team that has been paced by Corey Perry (five goals, four assists) and Ryan Getzlaf (three goals, six assists), who are tied atop the score sheet for Anaheim with nine points apiece while Mathieu Perreault has eight points on three tallies and five helpers.
Toronto counters with a top-notch scorer of its own in Joffrey Lupul, who leads the club with 10 points on six goals and four assists. Mason Raymond (four goals, four assists), Nazem Kadri (three goals, five assists) and Phil Kessel (two goals, six assists) each have eight points for Toronto.
In net, the Toronto sharpshooters will try to best Jonas Hiller, who is unbeaten with a 4-0-0 record to go along with a 2.01 GAA and a .937 save percentage while Anaheim will try to take down Jonathan Bernier (4-3-0, 2.14 GAA and a .938 save percentage).
Toronto will hope to end its two-game losing streak while Anaheim will look to extend its winning streak to eight games when these teams hit the ice tonight at the Air Canada Centre.
