Great Britain Through To The Quarter Finals Of Davis Cup After A Dramatic Win

Great Britain won the match in Davis Cup tie against Canada not by the point's margin but in a dramatic way. The 17-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov defaulted as he hit the Umpire Arnaud Gabas in the eye with a ball.

Denis Shapovalov was trailing Kyle Edmund by 6-3, 6-4, and 2-1 and during the third set Shapovalov in anger smashed a ball which went to hit the Umpire Gabas on the eye. Looking at the scenario, referee Brian Earley had no other choice but to abandon the match and declare Britain as the winners as reported by News & Star.

This default gave Britain a 3-2 victory and they proceed in the World Group first-round tie at Ottawa. Though this would not have been the way Great Britain would have thought and it was not intentional from Shapovalov.

The public who roared for Vasek Pospisil's win over Dan Evans by 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 was found booing at the TD Place Arena after this incident. "It was a strange way to finish," said Edmund. "I've never been part of something like that."

Great Britain's captain Leon Smith was also shocked looking at this incident. "A bit of a surprise what happened at the end there and I feel for the young lad. He's a great talent and he's learned a harsh lesson today" said Smith as reported in BBC.

Britain once again had the advantage because if their rankings and also Edmund was having five years plus growing bank of ATP experience behind him. Shapovalov was playing in a very confident manner and the way he was hammering down the big serves and hitting quick one handed backhands.

But the inexperience was also the reason we saw his handful of loose games. "There's always a lesson to be learned from the good moments and the worst moments. If he wants to compete at this level he has to keep it together" said Martin Laurendeau the Captain of Canada's team.
