Daniel Bryan announced Smackdown Live what Dolph Ziggler would face at the WWE Elimination Chamber event on Sunday. Bryan said Ziggler will face Apollo Crews and Kalisto in a handicap match in the pay-per view event.
In one of the Smackdown Live episodes on 3rd January, 2017, Zigglers lost a singles match to Baron Corbin. After that match, Kalisto came to Ziggler's aid when he was assaulted by The Lone Wolf, Ziggler then superkicked Kalisto, turning heel in process for the first time since 2013.
He reportedly assaulted Apollo Crews backstage when he was being questioned for his actions at Kalisto. The coming weeks saw Ziggler continuously attacking Kalisto and Crews backstage. On an episode in Smackdown Live, he was invited onto a special "King's Court" segment with Jerry "The King" Lawler. There, he proudly took resposibility for the heart attack that was suffered by the Memphis wrestler icon on 10th September, 2012.
Then after that he superkicked Jerry Lawler in the chest before leaving the ring quite proudly, thus cementing his heel turn. On the following episode of Smackdown Live, Ziggler defeated Kalisto in a singles match, after the win he tried to unmask Kalisto but was unable to do as he was stopped by Apollo Crews.
Tonight on Smackdown Live, Dolph Ziggler eventually lost a singles match to Apollo Crews when Apollo turned a Superkick into a schoolboy pin. Ziggler then immediately got up and superkicked Crews before he could celebrate his victory. Then he started attacking Crews with steel chair strikes, Kalisto came to save but he also came under steel chair strikes.
After a commercial break, Ziggler was trying to leave the arena when general manager Daniel Bryan confronted him, Ziggler said he was getting his stuffs and leaving the building. Daniel asked Ziggler whether he would always throw a chair to someone he just lost to. Ziggler then retorted by saying he could beat both Crews and Kalisto at the same time, but beating them by chair was more fun.
Taking on this point, Daniel Bryan then made a handicap match official for the Elimination Chamber event, so the matchup is Dolph Ziggler vs Apollo Crews and Kalisto. Elimination Chamber will eventually take place on Sunday, February 12th, 2017 at Phoenix, Arizona.
