Toronto comes into play after blowing a lead and suffering a tough loss in their last game while Buffalo has lost five straight games. The first time these teams met, the Sabres beat the Maple Leafs 3-1 in Buffalo on Nov. 15 while the Leafs got some revenge on the Sabres in Toronto the very next night by notching a 4-2 victory.
The Maple Leafs blew a 4-1 lead against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday and ended up losing the game 6-5 in a shootout. The team will hope to bounce back from that rough loss.
"We stopped skating. We stopped forechecking," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said via NHL.com. "There's no explanation for us not getting any shots in the third period."
The Sabres lost 3-1 to the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday to ensure a fifth loss in a row, now the team will look to stop the streak there.
"The one thing we asked our team to do is compete, and we competed," interim coach Ted Nolan said per NHL.com. "When things are difficult, it's easy to point fingers, but this group is really starting to pay attention. We're making strides in the right direction."
The Sabres have been led by Matt Moulson, who has 19 points off of nine goals and 10 assists while Cody Hodgson has found the twine eight times and added nine helpers for 17 points.
Phil Kessel has paved the way for the Leafs with 22 points off of 13 goals and nine assists while James van Riemsdyk has lit the lamp 11 times and added eight assists for 19 points and Mason Raymond (eight goals, nine assist) and Nazem Kadri (seven goals, 10 assists) each have 17 points.
The Leafs have been backstopped by Jonathan Bernier, who is 8-6-2 with a 2.33 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage while Ryan Miller is 4-15-0 with a 3.11 GAA and a .918 save percentage.
