Texas State Football Defensive Back Shot Dead, Police Says

Texas State football defensive back Khambrail Winters was confirmed dead due to gunshot wounds he suffered in an alleged drug deal involving two other persons at the Lodge Apartments.

The officers rushed to the scene after hearing a series of gunshots at around 9:31 in the evening on November 24.

As stated by CBS, the authorities found Winters lying with a chest wound from a gunshot. Despite the efforts made by the San Marcos police, personnel from San Marcos Fire Department, and Hay County EMS to revive the 20-year-old, he was later declared dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported that they saw Enalisa Blackman and Michael Ifeanacho accompanying the victim to the apartment.

According to KVUE, the city spokesman revealed in an interview that Blackman had a rendezvous with two individuals in a deal to purchase marijuana.

"Police are asking for any surveillance video of the area around the shooting or in the parking lot of Building 4," the city spokesman added.

The spokesman refused to release any additional statements about the recent tragedy.

Meanwhile, a manhunt operation was conducted for the immediate capture of the other suspects, FOX 4 of Dallas-Fort Worth announced.

Blackman and Ifeanacho, detained at the Hays County Jail, have been charged with capital murder.

At this point, the investigation continues in the hopes of identifying the other involved persons and witnesses around the location. The police are also seeking surveillance videos that circulated in the area. However, the cameras located at the apartment are defunct, according to the police statement.

In a statement from Jake Spavital, Winters' head coach, in ESPN, he said that the whole Texas State University grieved over the death of the Houston-born player.

"I met with the players this morning to share the news. We will stand together as a team and support one another during this difficult time. Our thoughts and condolences are with Khambrail's family and loved ones."

Winter's death counts as the third homicide reported this year in San Marcos. Prior deaths of Justin Putnam and Ivoryanna Ballard in April and May are the first and second cases.

Furthermore, Winters did not play any game this year. In 2019, he was awarded as an honorable mention in the All-Sun selection for a freshman. He spent his younger years enjoying football at Alief Taylor High School in Houston.

Also this month, Ka'Darian Smith, a former football player from UH and Spring High School, has been shot inside his apartment at Drewery Place. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

It was reported by the authorities that the shooting happened at around 1:20 a.m. in the vicinity of 2850 Fannin. The police believed that the suspect in Smith's death has access to the 12-story apartment building.

Furthermore, the authorities are planning to interview those who lived in the apartment. They also started inspecting cameras for security and investigation. Until this time, the identity of the suspect remains unknown.
