Tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET, the San Jose Sharks (18-3-5, 39 points) and Toronto Maple Leafs (14-10-3, 31 points) faceoff in the first of two meetings this season live from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. San Jose enters on top of the Pacific Division and is boasting a five-game winning streak while Toronto has won nine of their 13 home games this season and play 10 of their 14 games in December at home.
The Sharks defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday to close out a sweep of their homestand.
"It's the division, it's the conference," coach Todd McLellan said per NHL.com. "It's that close. It's got to be exciting for hockey fans all over because there really isn't anybody that's pulling away or a clear-cut favorite, and some really important hard-fought games at this time of year."
The Maple Leafs have struggled this week, with their most recent loss coming in a 4-2 defeat to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
"We need to find our spark," goalie Jonathan Bernier said. "We have to be excited to play, and we have to find a way to score goals. That's what we were doing at the start of the season."
Bernier is 8-7-2 with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage this season. For San Jose, Antti Niemi is 15-3-5 with a 2.21 GAA and a .917 save percentage thus far.
Joe Thornton is on a five-game point streak and leads the Sharks with 29 points off of four goals and 25 assists while Logan Couture has nine tallies and 18 helpers for 27 points and Patrick Marleau has found the twine 12 times and added 14 helpers for 26 points.
Phil Kessel paves the way for the Maple Leafs with 24 points off of 14 goals and 10 assists and is also on a three-game point streak while James van Riemsdyk has lit the lamp 12 times and added eight assists for 20 points and Mason Raymond has found the back of the net nine times while adding nine helpers for 18 points.
The Sharks look to continue their winning streak while the Maple Leafs hope to halt their losing streak when the puck drops tonight at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
