While they played enemies on the big screen as rivals in The Fast and the Furious, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and the late Paul Walker were great friends in real life and even bonded over being fathers. Johnson reflected on his friend and co-star in light of his tragic and fatal car crash that occurred last Saturday.
Johnson, 41, praised Walker for how he always put family first and reminisced on some good times the two had shared throughout the years.
"When I first met Paul, I think in our late 20s, we were young kids in the business," Johnson, a former professional wrestler turned actor, told Entertainment Weekly. "Then years later, when I did Fast Five, we had an opportunity to spend a lot of time together and become reacquainted."
Johnson also reflected about how the two actors' lives had changed from when they first met at a young age further into their adulthood when they each had kids of their own.
"We had both been in the business at that time for over a decade, and the most important thing that we had in common was the importance of family time and being a great father to our daughters. We bonded over that," he told the publication.
Despite their massive fame and busy schedules, both Johnson and Walker seemed to always put their families first even when both enjoyed tremendous success in their lives that would possibly prove as a distraction to a lot of other fathers.
Johnson recalled fondly that he and Walker spoke about their respective families very often.
"It was always the number one topic we would talk about," he told Entertainment Weekly. "We would talk about silly guy things, his fast cars and my pickup trucks, or we would talk about the beautiful energy of Hawaii - but it always ultimately came back to family. And very specifically the beautiful and important bond between a father and his daughter, and how we both realized that over the years."
Johnson said that Walker's daughter, Meadow Walker, 15, was the first thing that crossed his mind when he heard of his friend's tragic passing.
"Not surprisingly, when I got the news that he had passed away, the first words out of my mouth were, 'He has a daughter.' It's very sad," Johnson told the publication. "We can't help but to hope that their final time together was beautiful and strong and an amazing memory."
