Retired Argentine star Sergio Aguero revealed that his best friend, Lionel Messi, "cracked up" after seeing his new club's position in the MLS standings.

Aguero sent Messi a screenshot of the Eastern Conference standings, saying, "Your team is behind! You have to move up to 8th/9th!"

"We have to make the playoffs," the star acquisition responded.

The Fort Lauderdale-based team is currently sitting at the bottom of the league's Eastern Conference, claiming 15 points with 5 wins and 11 losses. They are also ranked 27th out of 29 teams in the overall standings.

Messi will have a lot of work to do if he wants to lift the MLS Cup.

There is Hope for Inter Miami Championship

Unlike traditional European leagues, which use the point system to determine the champions, MLS teams go through a playoff tournament similar to other American sports leagues to win the MLS Cup.

Inter Miami would need to rise to the 8th or 9th spot in the Eastern Conference to enter the wild card round or, in NBA terms - the play-in tournament.

If the MLS followed the traditional European system, Inter Miami would be out of the championship contention by now, as they would need other teams to lose their games for them to climb up the standings.

However, in a playoff format, anything can happen, especially if they acquire more quality players as the season progresses. The club needs to win enough games to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Fellow Floridian team Miami Heat is now playing in the NBA Finals after qualifying for the playoffs via the play-in tournament.
