The Japanese women's national team made history at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after they defeated Spain for the first time, claiming a dominant 4-0 win in their final game at the tournament's group stages.

Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmatí was upset about the loss, saying the team was pissed off.

"I am lucky to win a lot of games and I am not used to it at all, but these things make you stronger, help you reflect and go out in the next game with renewed energy," the 26-year-old said.

Bonmatí added that she was surprised by the tactics used by Japan, who utilized a low block, waited for Spain's mistakes, and attacked on the counter, where they took advantage.

Japan topped Group C and won all of their three games at the group stages with a goal difference of 11.

Despite the loss, Spain will advance to the knockout stages after placing second in Group C, claiming wins over Costa Rica and Zambia.
