Tonight at 7:00 p.m. the San Jose Sharks (19-4-5, 43 points) and Carolina Hurricanes (12-12-5, 29 points) go head-to-head live from the PNC Arena in North Carolina for the first of two meetings this season. San Jose comes into play after having their six-game winning streak snapped on Thursday while the Hurricanes were able to win on Thursday to extend their winning streak to two games.
The Sharks failed to join the Blackhawks as the only team with 20 wins this season as the Pittsburgh Penguins handed them a 5-1 loss Thursday where the lineup was tinkered around a bit.
"I saw some frustrated players, and with the amount of hockey that we've played and that we have to play on this road trip, I didn't think frustration was a real good emotion to have with two periods left," coach Todd McLellan told CSN Bay Area. "So we mixed them around a little bit and hopefully saved a little bit of energy for tomorrow, because we didn't use much tonight."
The Hurricanes defeated the Nashville Predators 5-2 Thursday in a game where Jeff Skinner notched a hat trick. The team will look to notch its third straight win for the first time this season.
"It's nice to get out there for the lead," Skinner told Fox Sports Carolinas. "I think we always want to get off to that good start and build from there. I think [in] the last two games, we've done a good job of that."
Skinner is second on the team with 17 points off of nine goals and eight assists while captain Eric Staal paces the team with six tallies and 16 assists for 22 points and Andrej Sekera places third with 15 points by lighting the lamp six times and adding nine tallies.
Joe Thornton paces the Sharks with 31 points off of five goals and 26 assists while Logan Couture has found the back of the net 10 times and added 18 helpers for 28 points and Patrick Marleau (12 goals, 14 assists) and Joe Pavelski (nine goals, 17 assists) each have 26 points.
In net, Antti Niemi was pulled last night so it's unsure if he'll start for the Sharks, but he is 16-4-5 with a 2.31 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage while Carolina backstop Cam Ward is 4-5-4 with a 2.90 GAA and a .908 save percentage.
The Sharks look to lay the groundwork for a new winning streak while the Hurricanes want a third win in a row for the first time this season when they faceoff tonight in North Carolina.
