The Kansas City Chiefs are on the brink of making history as they strive to become the first team to secure three consecutive Super Bowl victories.

The Chiefs recently became the ninth team to win back-to-back Super Bowls by defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime last Sunday, February 11, with a score of 25-22. This game was held at Allegiant Stadium, the Raiders home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The previous season saw them secure another narrow victory in Super Bowl 57 against the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35.

Remarkably, none of the previous eight teams to achieve back-to-back Super Bowl victories managed to return to the championship game. Only three reached their respective conference championships, two dropped out of the Divisional Round, and three missed the playoffs.

The most recent team to secure consecutive Super Bowl wins was the 2003-04 New England Patriots, led by quarterback Tom Brady.

Although the Chiefs possess a formidable lineup with the exceptional talent of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, realizing this unprecedented goal will likely require strategic moves and adjustments.

2 Moves Kansas City Chiefs must make in offseason to win first-ever Super Bowl 3-peat

1. Sign Chris Jones into a long-term contract

Defensive tackle Chris Jones has undeniably been the best defensive player for the Chiefs, playing a pivotal role in all three Super Bowl victories this decade.

The 29-year-old delivered once again in the 2023 regular season, contributing 20 solo tackles, 10 assists, and 10.5 sacks in 16 out of 17 games.

However, he missed one game due to a holdout over the offseason, driven by a contract dispute, as the 2023 season marked the final year of his existing contract.

The three-time Super Bowl champion was reportedly seeking a more lucrative deal, aiming for $30 million per year. This figure puts him in the same salary range as defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who signed a three-year, $95 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, becoming the league's highest-paid non-quarterback.

Jones missed out on the entire training camp and the Week 1 game, resulting in a 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions. Eventually, he agreed to a short-term one-year deal with incentives worth up to $25 million to play with the Chiefs in the 2023 season, though this deal has now expired.

The Chiefs are now faced with the appropriate task of taking decisive steps to secure a long-term deal with Jones that satisfies both parties, especially considering his outstanding performance in the 2023 season.

In addition to securing his third Super Bowl title, Jones earned his second consecutive First Team All-Pro selection and made his fifth Pro Bowl appearance in the 2023 season. His continued presence remains crucial if the Chiefs aspire to achieve the unprecedented feat of a three-peat.

2. Add reinforcement in the wide receiver position

Undoubtedly, the Chiefs' top priority is acquiring a wide receiver. The team's receiving corps had a disappointing season, leading the NFL in dropped passes and dropped pass percentage.

A silver lining in the team's wide receiver room was rookie Rashee Rice, their second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The 23-year-old has proven to be one of the league's top rookie receivers, establishing himself as a dependable target for Mahomes. In the 2023 season, he impressively caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns.
