Bills Sign Former Backup QB Who Had Dismal Stint With Steelers

The Buffalo Bills are bringing back Mitch Trubisky, who served as their backup quarterback behind Josh Allen during the 2021 season.

The specific terms of the 29-year-old's new deal with the team have not been disclosed. For reference, Trubisky was under a one-year contract valued at $2.5 million during his previous stint with the Bills.

During that season, the former North Carolina Tar Heel played in six games, posting a passer rating of 47.4 with 43 yards and one interception.

The Bills had a successful 2022 season, finishing with an 11-6 record and clinching their division title for the fourth consecutive year.

However, their playoff journey ended in the divisional round when they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mitch Trubisky's tenure with the Steelers

Following his tenure with the Bills in 2021, Trubisky secured a two-year, $14.25 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2022 season, inclusive of up to $27 million in incentives.

However, Trubisky's time in Pittsburgh proved challenging. As the starter, he managed a 2-5 record while completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns, and ten interceptions.

Struggling to maintain his starting position, Trubisky ultimately lost the role to rookie Kenny Pickett by Week 5 of the 2022 season.

In 2023, Trubisky reclaimed the starting role when Pickett suffered an ankle injury in Week 13. However, he lost both of his starts while recording 359 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Subsequently, Mason Rudolph took over as the starter and led the team to a 3-0 record, helping the Pittsburgh Steelers secure a playoff berth.
