Tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET, the Phoenix Coyotes (18-10-5, 44 points) and Toronto Maple Leafs (17-16-3, 37 points) go head-to-head live from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto for the first of two meetings against each other this season. Phoenix enters play having dropped out of playoff contention in the Western Conference while Toronto has lost five of its last six.
The Coyotes dropped to ninth place in the conference Tuesday in a 3-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
'We made mistakes, took some bad penalties,'' center Mike Ribeiro said via ESPN. ''Special units are part of the game, and if you can't get them to click, oftentimes you'll lose the game."
Ribeiro leads the team with 26 points off of nine goals and 17 assists while Radim Vrbata has nine tallies and 16 helpers for 25 points and Shane Doan has found the back of the net 12 times and added 11 assists for 23 points. Doan (illness) is sidelined.
The Maple Leafs were down on themselves following a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.
"We simply got embarrassed," Mason Raymond said per NHL.com. "It's pretty simple. I don't think guys can be happy with that at all. We got embarrassed at home. I think we got beat out all over the ice in almost all situations. It's something we need to improve."
Raymond is third on the team with 25 points off of 11 goals and 14 assists while James van Riemsdyk has lit the lamp 14 times and added 12 helpers for 26 points and Phil Kessel has a team-high 32 points off of 17 markers and 15 assists.
Mike Smith is probable to start for the Coyotes and is 14-8-5 with a 2.94 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage while Jonathan Bernier is likely to start for the Leafs and is 10-11-2 with a 2.53 GAA and a .925 save percentage.
The Coyotes look to bounce back from a loss and get back in the playoff picture while the Leafs hope to avoid another embarrassment when these teams hit the ice tonight at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
