FC Barcelona's win as La Liga champions for this season has been overshadowed by a car crashing into a crowd.
It has been reported that more than a dozen people have been injured by the said crash. While some reports have pegged the number of injured at 13, Sports Illustrated said that the number has risen to 15, citing Catalan police.
According to Sports Illustrated's report, the commissioner of the Catalan police, Eduard Sallent, confirmed that "A person driving a vehicle on an open road was surrounded by fans heading to the stadium and, for some reason that is still unclear, accelerated to leave the scene."
Sallent clarified that "was stopped, tried to exit, and, in the exit maneuver, hit the people in front of it."
The incident, which took place shortly after kick-off, remains under investigation. The driver of the vehicle had been arrested at the scene.
Barcelona Wins La Liga
Due to the incident, the game between Espanyol and Barcelona was halted for two minutes, but it was eventually restarted by the referee after talking to the players, coaching staff, and the police.
Barcelona went on to win the game 2-0 with winger Lamine Yamal scoring in the 53rd minute and Fermín López scoring in the 96th minute.
With the win, Barcelona secured the La Liga championship for the 2024-2025 season.
