San Antonio Spurs fans haven't seen a superstar for a long time since Kawhi Leonard. But with the generational talent in Victor Wembanyama, who's already a superstar in the making, the Texas team needs a veteran superstar who will complement his ability.
Rumors are pointing to Kevin Durant joining the French center, but leakers are dumping cold water on the notion. While enthusiasts and experts are abuzz with speculation, the latest reports indicate the Spurs might not be as keen on the former MVP as everybody thought.
KD Trade Rumors Fueled by Brazen Broadcast Claim
The Durant-to-San Antonio chatter started when Arizona Sports 98.7's John Gambadoro made a surprising claim.
"I expect Kevin Durant will be traded from the Phoenix Suns next week," Gambadoro said. "There's a lot of stuff out there. Some of it's accurate, a lot of it is not accurate. We've said it all along that he will be traded by the draft. Outside shot that something happens sooner. But I'm gonna say that next week, my expectations are Kevin Durant is traded."
This aggressive prophecy made some fans believe that this is going to end up well, especially considering the Suns' frugal playoff history and Durant's aspiration to win another title.
Spurs Might Value NBA Draft Over KD
Although the hype surrounds it, NBA insider Grant Afseth of Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation poured some cold water on the excitement. Afseth states that the San Antonio Spurs are becoming more skeptical of trading for the 37-year-old superstar.
Afseth said that while rumors about Durant ending up in San Antonio are all over the place, it might not yield any real traction.
In Sports World News' report yesterday, the Philadelphia 76ers are interested in getting potential No. 2 draft pick Dylan Harper. However, the Sixers might have a hard time snatching one of the top prospects for the 2025 NBA Draft class.
The Spurs see Harper as a better long-term fit for the franchise, which is constructing around 21-year-old Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama.
Spurs Could Be Doubtful of Durant Because of His Age
One of the most pressing issues in the Spurs organization is Durant's age. KD is 37, which is the last year of his prime, whereas Wembanyama is only starting out in the NBA.
According to HardwoodHeroics, sources reveal San Antonio is not willing to derail their youthful squad by sending out valuable assets for a short-term championship bid that might conflict with their rebuilding schedule.
Durant's possible acquisition would call on the Spurs to say goodbye to players such as Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan, two key building blocks of their young core.
While CBS Sports' Sam Quinn's mock trade would send Kevin Durant to the Spurs for an impressive return, San Antonio would part with Vassell, Sochan, veteran Harrison Barnes, and the No. 14 pick from the upcoming draft.
This hypothetical proposal would enable the Spurs to retain building blocks Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, and rookie Stephon Castle, creating a high-octane lineup with Durant. Still, Quinn realized that Phoenix would be hesitant to accept the return, as the involved players might not match the Suns' immediate requirements.
If the Spurs can't get it done with Durant, they could tone down to get another interesting All-Star. Lauri Markkanen is open, and the Spurs need a good forward who could lure interest away from Wemby.
