Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier continues to face an unclear future as the 2025-26 NBA season approaches. Despite ongoing rumors of a potential trade or buyout, the veteran guard is expected to participate in Miami's training camp next week.
Rozier was involved in illegal gambling activity when he was still a Charlotte Hornets player. The same incident led to a lifetime ban of former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter.
Rozier Still Under Federal Investigation
According to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, Rozier will join the Heat training camp soon. Amid the rumors that the Heat will welcome him once again
His last game with the Miami Heat came on April 13 in a 119-118 loss to the Washington Wizards, where he went scoreless, shooting 0-of-9 from the field and 0-of-4 from three in 34 minutes.
Complicating matters further is Rozier's involvement in a federal investigation linked to suspicious gambling activities. It was reported that a professional bettor placed 30 wagers within 46 minutes, all tied to Rozier's performance in a 2023 matchup.
The NBA confirmed it launched its own review at the time. Spokesperson Mike Bass stated that the league found no violations of NBA rules but acknowledged cooperation with an ongoing probe by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York. The case remains active, keeping Rozier's status clouded heading into the season.
Rozier's Consistently Poor Performance
According to Basketball Insiders, Rozier played 64 games last year, where he started in 23 games. He averaged 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists across 25.9 minutes per game. However, his shooting percentages were underwhelming at 39.1% from the field and 29.5% from beyond the arc.
That's just a shadow of his 2023-24 season, where he averaged 19.8 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.0 rebounds in 61 games.
Heat Buyout and Waiver Talks
Reports suggest that Miami has considered a buyout of Rozier's contract, but no progress has been made. Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel revealed that discussions took place earlier this month, though outside interest in the 31-year-old remains minimal.
If the Heat waives Rozier before the January 10 guarantee deadline, they could create financial flexibility. However, doing so comes with significant risk. Should Rozier suffer an injury before his release, the $26.6 million he is owed this season would become fully guaranteed.
Another option would be stretching his contract, reducing his $26.6 million cap hit to $8.9 million annually over three years. While that would ease immediate financial strain, it could hinder Miami's future cap flexibility.
Rozier is set to join his teammates in the training camp despite the uncertainty surrounding his career. Between the ongoing federal probe, inconsistent on-court production, and complex financial implications, the Heat must carefully weigh its next steps.
