The Victor Wembanyama-Kevin Durant duo did not go as planned. The previous rumors pushed this narrative, but the 15-time All-Star went to the Houston Rockets.
That doesn't mean a huge loss for the French center as the Spurs are rolling with a 4-0 win this season. To make their title bid stronger, rumors suggest that San Antonio should get LeBron James.
Wembanyama's Rise Sparks Championship Ambitions
Victor Wembanyama's phenomenal opening has reset the bar in San Antonio. The 7-foot-4 prodigy is putting up an astonishing 31.0 points, 13.8 rebounds, 4.8 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game on 60.3% shooting from the field. Even without an All-Star by his side, with De'Aaron Fox having not played this season yet, Wemby has propelled the Spurs into one-sided domination on both sides of the court.
NBA analyst Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report thinks it's time for the Spurs to go all-in and trade for LeBron James. He believes that combining the veteran legend with the rising star could immediately turn San Antonio into a Western Conference powerhouse.
LeBron-Wembanyama Duo Could Turn Things Around
The possible collaboration between James and Wembanyama would be a generational pairing. James' leadership, highest basketball IQ, and championship pedigree would pair well with Wembanyama's athleticism and defensive flexibility. They'd be one of the most feared inside-out twin threats in NBA history.
Swartz sees a solid core with Wembanyama, James, De'Aaron Fox, and young standout Dylan Harper as a team that can make a long playoff run in 2026. On paper, it's a Spurs' dream come true and an opponent's worst nightmare.
The Trade Challenge for San Antonio
But bringing James aboard from the Los Angeles Lakers would not be inexpensive. According to Fadeaway World, the four-time NBA title winner will make $52.6 million this year, so the Spurs would need to construct a trade package of multiple players to make it work.
A Stephon Castle-led deal with veterans Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan might equal out salary-wise, but the Lakers might reject it quickly. It's not an instant guarantee for the Spurs.
The Dangers of Dealing for an Older Superstar
LeBron James is still productive, scoring 24.4 points, grabbing 7.8 rebounds, and passing for 8.2 assists a year ago, but at age 40, health issues are on the horizon. Now out with sciatica, his fitness is a real concern. Acquiring a player of his caliber midseason also presents difficulties, particularly in the absence of an entire training camp.
Though the prospect of pairing Wembanyama with LeBron James is enticing, the risks are real. The trade would be expensive, and James still has a no-trade clause, so he'd need to want it.
