Former Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks big man Precious Achiuwa could be on the verge of an NBA return, with the Sacramento Kings reportedly showing strong interest in signing him.
The Nigerian center spent some time with the Miami Heat before going to free agency this season.
Sacramento Kings Reportedly Interested in Precious Achiuwa
Since being waived by the Miami Heat before the start of the regular season, 26-year-old Precious Achiuwa has waited patiently for another opportunity in the NBA. Now, it appears the Sacramento Kings may be ready to give him that second chance.
Per NBA insider Jake Fischer, Sacramento is quite seriously considering signing the former New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors forward. The move could come at a perfect time since Achiuwa recently changed representation, which could mean he's pushing hard to find a stable role in the league.
From Miami to Toronto
Achiuwa joined the NBA in the 2020-21 season as a first-round draft pick of the Miami Heat. For all his athleticism and energy, his rookie year allowed him just 12 minutes per game. But he had shown enough potential that, one season later, the Raptors brought him aboard in the Kyle Lowry sign-and-trade.
Achiuwa found more room to shine in Toronto, where his minutes nearly doubled. He became a reliable spark off the bench, averaging around nine points and six rebounds per game over two seasons. His hustle, rebounding ability, and defensive versatility made him a key rotational player during the Raptors' retooling years.
Stint With the Knicks and Short Return to Miami
Achiuwa's next stop came via trade to the New York Knicks in the deal that brought OG Anunoby to New York. Though his role remained primarily off the bench, he continued to contribute consistent energy and efficient production.
With his contract expiring at the end of the 2024–25 season, he was not re-signed by the Knicks, which made him a free agent. Earlier this year, he briefly reunited with the Miami Heat for training camp, but he didn't make their final roster.
Potential Fit With The Kings
According to reports from BasketNews via BBall Rumors, several EuroLeague clubs were interested in the Nigerian-born forward, but apparently, Achiuwa's focus has remained on staying in the NBA, and the Sacramento Kings may provide that avenue.
Sacramento would likely waive rookie Issac Jones to make roster space if the deal goes through. Achiuwa would add some much-needed depth to the frontcourt behind Domantas Sabonis, bringing energy, rebounding, and defensive versatility off the bench that would certainly fit into Sacramento's up-tempo, physical style.
