Tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET, the san Jose Sharks (34-13-6, 74 points) and Edmonton Oilers (17-32-6, 40 points) hit the ice at Rexall Place for the third of four meetings against each other this season. San Jose is coming off of a loss but won six straight games before that and has won seven of their last nine while Edmonton is looking to tie their season high by winning three straight games. The Sharks have beaten the Oilers twice thus far this season, with a 3-1 win in Edmonton on Nov. 15 and a 5-1 win in San Jose on Jan. 2.
While Antti Niemi is the Shark's No.1 goalie, Alex Stalock has played well and broke a franchise record Monday in net by continuing a shutout streak that lasted 178 minutes, 55 seconds before it was broken in a game that the Los Angeles Kings eventually won 1-0.
"Alex was real good," coach Todd McLellan said, according to NHL.com. "Excellent experience for him tonight playing against that team, to fight through their size and their strength around the net, their deflections. It was very solid and we're very happy with him."
Niemi, who is second in the league in wins, will likely to suit up tonight, and is 27-10-6 with a 2.37 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage while Edmonton will likely turn to Ben Scrivens between the pipes, who is 8-7-4 with a 2.03 GAA and a .930 save percentage.
The Oilers have struggled offensively, but relished the spoiler role on Monday when they defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-2.
"It's good to get some sunlight into the cave once in a while," forward Jesse Joensuu, who scored in the game, told the Edmonton Sun. "I think the last game obviously helped. I think overall our look was better than what it has been this season. I thought we deserved to win against these guys."
Edmonton has been led by Taylor Hall, who has eight assists in his last seven games and 51 points off of 18 goals and 33 assists while Jordan Eberle has 18 tallies and 25 helpers for 43 points and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has lit the lamp 15 times and added 25 assists for 40 points.
Joe Thornton has paced San Jose with 55 points off of eight goals and 47 assists while Joe Pavelski has 28 markers and 25 helpers for 53 points and Patrick Marleau has found the back of the net 22 times and added 26 assists for 48 points.
San Jose looks for their third win this season over their opponent while Edmonton tries to tie a season-high with three straight victories when the lights come up tonight at Rexall Place in Edmonton.
