Magic Johnson still is HIV positive. And no, he has not discovered a cure for the virus.
TMZ Sports reported Tuesday on Magic Johnson's interview with HipHopNation on Sirius XM Tuesday and talked about speculation about his treatment and whether he still had HIV.
"I'm glad 22 years later that I'm doing good and I think the question was would I be here in 22 years after finding out because at that time people said it was death sentence so that's what you thought," Johnson said to host Renada Romain.
She then said rumors existed that the NBA Hall of Famer, former Los Angeles Lakers star and part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers was either on a special medication or no longer had the HIV virus.
"I do have it and have had it for 22 years," Johnson said. "It's just laying asleep in my body.
The drugs have done their part, and I've done my part by exercising and having a positive attitude about having HIV."
He added that rumors had circulated that he "went to Kenya, I went to some place and some doctor helped me. No. I've never been to Kenya or anywhere like that. The same 30 drugs that are available to everybody, I'm on three of them - like a lot of people, on a cocktail. I take it once a day after dinner; that's it."
Johnson's interview was part of National Black HIV/AIDS awareness and said he was as much curse for HIV awareness as he has been a blessing.
" ... Especially for people in our community who say if I get it, I can beat it like Magic Johnson. I want to dispel that myth, too," he said. "The virus acts different in every body. Just because I'm doing well, you might not do well."
Thankfully, Johnson also dispelled rumors about the risks of coming in close contact with an HIV-positive person with his comeback in the NBA in 1996, playing the remainder of that season for the Lakers.
