The San Francisco 49ers might face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8 without their starting quarterback.

In the Niners' latest update on Brock Purdy's status, the 23-year-old play-caller has reportedly entered the NFL's concussion protocol, placing his availability against the Bengals on Sunday, October 29, in doubt, Oregon Live reported.

Purdy took a blow to the head when they lost to the Minnesota Vikings, 22-17, according to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.

Purdy experienced concussion-like symptoms when the team flew back to San Francisco. The Arizona native took a hard hit from Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks, Fox News reported.

Curiously, Purdy was able to continue playing against the Vikings and did not show any effects from Hicks' hit.

While Brock Purdy felt better on Wednesday, October 25, he still needs to clear several tests over a short period.

Niners may turn to Sam Darnold

Unless his status changes, Shanahan may have to turn to Sam Darnold for quarterbacking duties against the Bengals, The Athletic reported. The 26-year-old QB is in his first season with the Niners and edged out Trey Lance for the backup job.

However, Shanahan remains hopeful that Purdy will become available before Sunday's game.

"He definitely has enough time," Shanahan told reporters. "He just has to go through the process."
