Tim Tebow Cut, New England To Keep Ailing Rob Gronkowski On Opening Day Roster?

The New England Patriots have released quarterback Tim Tebow, ESPN is reporting.

The Patriots signed Tebow in June and almost from the minute the signing was announced the long polarizing quarterback has been a source of contentiousness.

When all was said and done, Tebow struggled mightily with consistency while in a Patriots uniform and ESPN is reporting that well may have been his downfall. During the preseason, he completed just 11 of 30 passes for 145 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran 16 times for 91 yards.

His two touchdowns came against the New York Giants in the last preseason game he played and some speculated that might be enough to help him keep his job. But in the end, Patriots Coach Bill Belichick elected to go with a more balanced and versatile roster.

Since he has less than four years of NFL service, Tebow is now subject to the league's waiver system, meaning if he clears waivers he will become a free agent and can sign with any other team, according to ESPN.

That might be easier said than done. After the New York Jets released him following one failed season, no team other the Patriots seem to express any genuine interest in him. Against the Giants in his last game as a Patriot, he completed just 6 of 11 passes, threw an interception and was also sacked four times.

In cutting ties with Tebow, the Patriots seem committed to opening the regular-season with still ailing tight end Rob Gronkowski as part of their 53-man roster. If he had been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, league rules stipulate he would have not been able to play or practice with the team for the first six weeks of the season.
