A radio station host in Miami took the Miami Hurricanes' loss to Florida State on Saturday a little too personally. Even for a University of Miami alum.
The Sun Sentinel reported Friday that sports talk radio show host Dan Sileo was fired by station WMEN 640-AM on Monday after Sileo, a former Hurricanes football player, tweeted that he was placing a $1,000 bounty on Florida State defensive lineman Timmy Jernigan.
Sileo tweeted that he would pay $1,000 to any Hurricanes player that "TAKES THIS KID OUT," Sileo attached a photo of Jernigan forming "The U" with his hands.
Sileo deleted the tweet and claimed that he was only joking, the Sun Sentinel reported, but WMEN still terminated his contract.
Sileo later had the audacity to tweet that he was surprised by the reaction to his original tweet.
"Let me start this TWEET by saying I am SHOCKED over the BACKLASH over a TWEET I made concerning an FSU player over the WEEKEND...It has been GREAT being at 640..BUT at this time it is BEST I part ways with 640..I offered 3 times on SUNDAY to resign..BUT..all the backlash..its NOT good for BOTH parties....My family has DEATH THREATS from some @FSU_Football FANS and I even kept my daughter home from school today. VERY SAD society we live in..when somebody ACTUALY [sic] thinks I would want another kid hurt..AWFUL....BUT..DEATH THREATS ARE REAL," Sileo tweeted.
"I understand my comment was OVER the TOP and 640 is right to protect there station...GREAT SUCCESS to them...But I felt the FSU PLAYER was PUSHING the U sign in my schools face...VERY disappointing to know the University of Miami lead the charge in this!! a school I BLEED for and WON for..I am TREATED LIKE A DOG by them..JUST like the MIRAS they have [EXPLETIVE] ON."
"My family and I are in hidding..PLEASE RESPECT our PRIVACEY [sic]....I have hired a PRIVATE COP and He is ARMED..THANK U..GO CANES"
The Sun Sentinel reported Sileo's termination as his third firing in the past year and eight months.
He was fired from another Miami station in March for tweeting sexist comments at Fox Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews. He also was fired from a Tampa radio station after calling three black NFL free agents "monkeys."
