Gardner Minshew II's run with Jacksonville is officially over after the Jaguars traded their former starting quarterback to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. That sixth-round pick may turn into a fifth-rounder for the Jacksonville Jaguars if Minshew gets to see action in 50 percent of the plays in three games this coming season.
The trade comes a day after Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer announced that no. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence will be the team's starting quarterback for their Week 1 clash against the Houston Texans on September 12.
Minshew's poor preseason ended Jacksonville stint
Minshew and Lawrence were locked in a quarterback battle throughout training camp and the preseason, with the two signal-callers alternating practice days with Jacksonville's first-team offense. Minshew failed to impress Jaguars' fans and coaching staff with his play in Jacksonville's first two preseason games, however, completing just 17 of 29 passes for 196 yards with two interceptions, one of which was picked in the end zone.

With Minshew now gone, the Jaguars' backup quarterback role will fall in the hands of C.J. Beathard. The 27-year-old, who played college ball at University of Iowa, had the better preseason compared to Minshew before the trade. He completed 22 of 30 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns in the Jaguars' first two preseason games.
Since being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL Draft, Beathard has appeared in 19 games, 12 of which were starts. During that stretch, Beathard has completed 291 passes for 3,469 yards with 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. This past offseason, he signed with the Jaguars with a contract reportedly worth $5 million over two years.

Minshew looks to rebuild career in Philadelphia
It is a disappointing end to Minshew's career in Jacksonville, which started sensationally when he was a rookie in 2019, replacing Nick Foles as the starter twice. He then started in Jacksonville's first seven games last season before a thumb injury, which he hid from the coaching staff, resulted in his demotion to the bench.
The Jaguars finished last year with a woeful 1-15 record, earning them the top pick in this year's draft. Jacksonville accelerated the rebuilding process, hiring Meyer as a coach and selecting Lawrence as their next franchise quarterback.
It was only a matter of time before Minshew got the boot in Jacksonville. He ends his Jaguars career with 5,530 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He will now hope to rebuild his career in Philadelphia, where he is expected to be third in the Eagles' quarterback depth chart behind Jalen Hurts and Joe Flacco.
