The Atlanta Hawks are breaking up their star backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray after two seasons of remaining mediocre.
The Hawks have traded shooting guard Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans following months of trade speculation, according to league insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
In exchange, the Pelicans sent power forward Larry Nance Jr., point guard Dyson Daniels, a 2025 first-round pick via the Los Angeles Lakers from the 2019 Anthony Davis trade, and a 2027 first-round pick, which would be the least favorable between the Milwaukee Bucks and Pelicans.
Nance will enter the final year of his contract in 2024-25 and will be making $11.2 million.
Daniels, who the Pelicans selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is on a rookie scale contract wherein 2024-25 is the last guaranteed year, while 2025-26 is a team option, and the team can extend a qualifying offer for 2026-27.
Dejounte Murray is on a long-term deal
Murray is set to enter the first season of a four-year deal worth $120 million in 2024-25, giving the Pelicans a long-term commitment from him.
The 27-year-old, who was an NBA All-Star in 2022, averaged a career-high 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 45.9% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range in 78 regular-season games.
Murray's age fits the timeline of the Pelicans, as most of their key players, such as Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson, and Herbert Jones, are entering their prime.
