
Real Madrid's captain Luka Modrić has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Modrić has been with the club for 13 years after joining in 2012 following four years with British club Tottenham Hotspur.
His last La Liga match with Real Madrid will take place on Saturday against Real Sociedad.
Modrić Says Thank You to Real Madrid and Its Fans
In an emotional message posted on his personal Instagram account, Modrić shared his thoughts on his impending departure from the club he has been with for more than a decade.
"Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a football player and as a person," he wrote in Spanish (translated by Sky Sports). "I am proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history."
"Although, after the Club World Cup, I will no longer wear this shirt on the pitch, I will always be a Madridista," Modrić added.
Ronaldo, Mbappé Sent Messages to Modrić
Many fellow soccer players, including current and former teammates, have sent supportive messages to Modrić following the announcement.
According to Goal, former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo said that "Thanks for everything, Luka It was an honor to share so many moments with you at the club. Wishing you all the best in what's to come!"
Current teammate Kylian Mbappé said to Modrić on Instagram, "was lucky to play and share the locker room with you this season. I saw up close what greatness means... Before being one of the best players of all time, you are a wonderful person."
"You've written the history of the best club in the world for over a decade, and you've won everything," Mbappé added. "But you've won something that has no price: the respect and admiration of the entire world. Thank you for everything, legend."
