WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg is officially walking back into the squared circle for what could be his last match. In March, he said he wanted to face John Cena for his retirement appearance.
Scheduled at Saturday Night's Main Event in Atlanta on July 12, Goldberg will face reigning World Heavyweight Champion Gunther in what seems to be a night of unfinished business.
Vince McMahon Broke His Promise to Goldberg
As TJR Wrestling notes, Goldberg hasn't wrestled in WWE since Elimination Chamber 2022, where he fell short in a Universal Title match vs. Roman Reigns.
Fans and even Goldberg himself have wondered ever since whether the past WCW superstar would be awarded one last match to end his career on his terms.
The story took a twist with Goldberg revealing that Vince McMahon had promised him a proper retirement match, an agreement left unfulfilled after McMahon departed from WWE in early 2024 following legal controversies.
Here's what Goldberg said in an 11 Alive interview.
"It just sat there for a while. And look, I'm not gonna pick up the phone and say, 'Hey, give me my retirement match.' So if it happened, it happened, and I was kind of fine with not performing again."

Triple H Delivers on a Long-Awaited Finale
With McMahon out, Paul "Triple H" Levesque is expected to fulfill Goldberg's desire. Since he now oversees WWE's creative direction, he could pick up the best storyline that will conclude Goldberg's career on a high note.
To honor Goldberg's legacy, WWE has booked his retirement bout in Atlanta, his adopted hometown, against one of the company's most dominant rising stars.
Gunther, who has carved a path of destruction through WWE's roster, now holds the World Heavyweight Championship. The 37-year-old wrestler previously held the Intercontinental Title for a record-breaking reign.
A win over Goldberg will open more storylines for Gunther. On the other hand, a Goldberg victory would offer a perfect storybook ending.
Goldberg on His Return
Goldberg informed 11 Alive that although he didn't campaign for an additional match, he couldn't say no when it was offered.
The 58-year-old wrestler said that he was not going to say no to the upcoming match.
"I don't care if I'm 70 years old, because 50% of me is better than 99% of the people on the planet."
Goldberg acknowledges he's not in peak physical form, but his pride, competitive spirit, and connection with fans are more than enough to fuel this one last battle.
Saturday Night's Main Event will be an emotional night for fans because of the Goldberg vs. Gunther match. The star-studded event will also feature LA Knight vs. Seth Rollins and Randy Orton vs. Drew McIntyre in the ring.
Goldberg won't be going easy on Gunther. This is going to be the last spear and jackhammer we will see from the former WWE champion.
