Ridge Holland has been working with the WWE since 2018, but some wrestling fans barely know him. The English wrestler is currently troubled as the company decided not to renew his contract while he is out with a serious injury.
Angered by WWE's move, Holland vented his frustrations on social media. He admitted he's undergoing a series of financial problems, and this made his life even harder. Immediately after the post, WWE released him from his contract, meaning he will no longer have a regular source of income and will be dependent on any aid others provide.
Family Challenges in Recovery
Holland's sudden firing became a devastating blow to his family. Being a dedicated husband and father of three children, this wrestler might have to undergo months of rehabilitation, which includes a probable neck surgery this month and another surgery in March. He would not go back to work, if everything went well, until the end of April or May.
According to CageSideSeats, his family already had to bear a pay cut of 55% during the previous year, and they have done everything possible to keep the expenses as low as possible.
GoFundMe Set Up to Support Holland
A GoFundMe page was launched to assist in covering living and medical expenses for Holland. The donation drive aims to give $60,000 to the former WWE wrestler. It mentions how someone who works as a 1099 contractor, like Holland, is not entitled to workers' compensation, sick leave, or any form of financial support from WWE, despite the injury having happened on the job.
Fans and fellow wrestlers have already begun contributing to help out: Chelsea Green shared the campaign on social media, pledging $1,000 monthly. According to Ringside News, AEW star Nick Jackson has donated $1,000.
While Holland's sentiment resonates with other people who experienced losing jobs while struggling to pay their bills, some people thought that this is something that's normal.
According to some comments from the r/WWE subreddit, if WWE doesn't want to re-sign him, they are not obligated to do so.
"This happens every day to people who don't make high 5 to 6 figures. It sucks...but it happens EVERY DAY," another Reddit user commented.
Another person said that Holland's entire career was sloppy, and he never got better throughout the years. "He doesn't deserve a new contract just because he got hurt. It sucks for him, but why is it on WWE to support him?"
