The Cincinnati Bengals have restructured quarterback Joe Burrow's contract, creating about $10 million in salary cap space as the team continues to adjust its roster ahead of the 2026 NFL season, according to multiple reports from ESPN and NFL Network.

The move was confirmed by a person familiar with the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team did not officially announce the adjustment.

Joe Burrow Contract Adjustment

By restructuring the deal, the Bengals spread part of Burrow's base salary into future years of his contract, helping them free up immediate financial flexibility.

Burrow originally signed a five-year, $275 million extension in 2023. The latest adjustment allows Cincinnati to push portions of his salary into the final years of the contract, specifically from 2027 through 2029.

While the Bengals could have opened up as much as $19.2 million by restructuring more aggressively, they opted for a smaller adjustment of roughly $10 million, ESPN reported.

The cap space boost comes at a critical time for Cincinnati. The team had only about $7.1 million in effective cap room before the restructure and recently made a major roster move by trading for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants ahead of the NFL Draft.

Lawrence was also signed to a one-year extension worth $28 million, adding pressure on the team's financial planning. Bengals leadership has already signaled that further roster moves and extensions could follow.

According to AP, several key young players from the 2023 draft class—including Myles Murphy, Chase Brown, Jordan Battle, DJ Turner, and Dax Hill—are expected to be considered for new deals before training camp begins.

Burrow, who is entering his seventh NFL season, remains the centerpiece of Cincinnati's long-term plans. The former No. 1 overall pick led the Bengals to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2021 season and an AFC Championship Game the following year, but the team has missed the playoffs in each of the past three seasons.

In 2025, Burrow was limited by injury after suffering a turf toe issue in Week 2 that kept him out for much of the season. He returned late in the year and finished with 1,809 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and five interceptions, including three pick-sixes.
