Former NBA guard Jameer Nelson has been promoted into a major leadership role after the organization made sweeping changes to its front office following another disappointing playoff finish.

The move comes after the team decided to part ways with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and remove longtime general manager Elton Brand from his position.

In the new structure, Nelson will take on expanded responsibilities under newly hired president Mike Gansey.

Jameer Nelson Takes Major Step

Nelson, who has been with the 76ers' front office since 2020, most recently served as assistant general manager.

According to NY Times, he was promoted to that role in May 2025 after climbing through the organization, including time with the Delaware Blue Coats, Philadelphia's G League affiliate, where he served as general manager. Now, the Philadelphia native is stepping into one of the most influential roles in shaping the team's roster and long-term direction.

Jameer Nelson brings both local roots and deep playing experience to the job. A standout at Saint Joseph's University, he became one of college basketball's top players before being selected 20th overall in the 2004 NBA Draft. He later spent most of his NBA career with the Orlando Magic, where he became an All-Star in 2009 and helped lead the team to the NBA Finals.

Jameer Nelson to Help Guide Sixers' Offseason Decisions

Philadelphia's decision to elevate Nelson comes at a critical time. The 76ers once again fell short in the postseason, getting swept in the Eastern Conference semifinals after a strong opening-round win over the Boston Celtics.

The early exit added to a long stretch of second-round disappointments for a franchise that has not reached the conference finals in 25 years.

With major roster decisions ahead, Nelson will now help steer conversations around the team's future core. The Sixers face big contract situations with stars like Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, along with decisions on key supporting players, NY Post reported.

Nelson's promotion signals trust in someone who has worked his way up inside the organization. From G League leadership to assistant general manager duties, his rise has been steady and built on player development and scouting experience.

He will now work closely under Gansey as the 76ers attempt to reset their basketball operations and build a more consistent playoff contender.
