The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made an important decision regarding the future of their longtime wide receiver, Mike Evans.
The team will not give the 30-year-old a contract extension this year despite the player's representatives giving a September 9 deadline for Tampa Bay to do so.
According to a report by CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson, despite the strong relationship between Evans, the team, and general manager Jason Licht, the team has spent much money on running backs for the past couple of years.
The Bucs also have to pay several other players, such as safety Antoine Winfield Jr., offensive tackle Chris Wirfs, running back Rachaad White, and fellow wide receiver Chris Godwin.
The team is also preparing to allot a significant amount to new starting quarterback Baker Mayfield if he plays well this upcoming season.
Tampa Bay will reportedly be testing what they have with their young core players before extending the veteran.

Mike Evans is entering the final year of his contract
The four-time Pro Bowler will be entering the final year of his contract, and he has previously stated that he wants to stay at Tampa Bay for the rest of his career.
The Super Bowl LV champion is set to make $23.7 million in 2023.
The Buccaneers drafted the 2016 Second Team All-Pro with the 7th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
