Chiefs Set to Retain Crucial Super Bowl Contributor After Inking Long-Term Deal

The Kansas City Chiefs will retain a pivotal contributor from their title-winning 2023 season.

Linebacker Drue Tranquill has inked a new deal with the team, securing a three-year contract valued at $19 million. The agreement includes $13 million in fully guaranteed money, as league insider Adam Schefter of ESPN reported.

Tranquill entered the NFL when the Los Angeles Chargers drafted him in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, selecting him with the 130th overall pick.

Spending his initial four seasons with the Chargers, he moved to the Chiefs before the 2023 season, securing a one-year deal valued at $3 million, which could reach up to $5 million through various incentives.

Tranquill should be happy with his new deal, considering the comments he made during the Chiefs' victory parade last month.

"Hey, this is way better than LA, I can tell you that much, baby. These streets are live, there's millions of people here. It's a special moment," the linebacker said.

The 28-year-old emerged as one of the less heralded yet integral components of the Chiefs' defense last season, bringing valuable versatility to the linebacker unit.

As the Chiefs face the potential departure of Willie Gay in free agency, retaining Tranquill strengthens the team's LB unit, especially with the promising Leo Chenal and Nick Bolton in the mix.

The former Notre Dame player notched impressive defensive stats in the 2023 season, recording 54 solo tackles, 25 assists, and 4.5 sacks across 16 games.

He contributed two tackles in the Super Bowl 58 against the San Francisco 49ers.
